With the current pandemic, the state of the music and touring industry has dramatically changed. Where were you when everything was brought to a halt?
Thankfully I wasn't international at the moment and was actually home in LA County. I was already working on some real estate projects and getting into the studio to work on what is now my latest album 'Cosmicoma'. I took that moment in time to focus further on music and play it safe during what was a very confusing time for everyone. I knew people that were stuck overseas for a bit so it was a lot more stressful for them, in my neck of the woods I just had to stay in my studio. Not the worst thing in the world.
How has that affected your plans for the coming year? Did you have a tour planned, upcoming album release?
Honestly, it didn't really affect me the way it did other touring artists. I don't play as many shows or tour like I used to, and focus mostly on running my business and trying. to release an album per year. I did push back some of my music a bit because I wasn't sure what was going to happen, but after a period of time just marched forward with mixing, mastering and getting my latest music into the world. In my opinion, during challenging times people need music more than ever.
What have you been doing to fill/make the most of your new-found free time at home? How are you supporting your mental health through all of this?
I'm lucky to be close enough to the beach here in LA so I would spend a lot of time outside, exercising and heading down to the beach to keep my head clear and focused. I did spend many hours a day in the studio though, which is a form of therapy all musicians can relate with. Other than that, I thank meditating, family and my amazing dog for keeping me grounded during the WTF moments of 2020.
As things are reopening & restrictions are lifting have you booked any new gigs? Tours? Etc? If your region is still under restriction, how are dealing with the Covid third wave?
I'm just taking things as they come, I know it's a little weird out there still and news is changing daily. I haven't booked any gigs, but I'm in the studio again working on new music. I'd be excited to go to a show soon as well, I see some are getting booked around my area of LA which is encouraging.
Favourite Starlite Room Moment?
I'm actually from Toronto originally and have known about the venue even when it was Rev Cabaret. I haven't been to a show at Starlite in quite some time, but I'm actually a huge fan of your site and all the great interviews with other artists.
Do you have a message for everyone at home reading this?
Support your local and independent artists, venues and make it a point monthly to put money into supporting these avenues directly if possible. Instead of Spotify or iTunes, see if the artist has a Bandcamp or merch page where you can make a purchase. If you're in the industry, buy the ticket to the show instead of asking for the guestlist (if possible). Oh, and please check out Betty Moon over at the links below!
